The Vikings have let go of head coach Mike Zimmer and general manager Rick Spielman. The Zimmer news is not at all a surprise. However, to me at least, the Spielman news is a surprise. Here’s my breakdown.
Mike Zimmer fired after 8 seasons
I love Zimmer. He’s easily a top 3 Vikings HC of all time. But all good things must come to an end. Although Zimmers tenure as Vikings HC ended in a poor way, he was the best head coach we had in a while. But, it’s clear he is not built to be a top HC in the new NFL. I think he can and will be an outstanding DC somewhere in this league, but you need a offensive guy as a HC nowadays. Also the way Zimmer through people, (Kellen Mond), under the bus is not something a elite HC can do. Thank you Zimmer, good luck elsewhere.
Rick Spielman fired after 12 seasons as GM, 16 with Minnesota
Now, this, is a surprise to me, and a lot others. I think firing Spielman outright was not the perfect move, but its understandable if the Wilf’s are looking to clean house. Personally, I would have kept Rick, but outside of Justin Jefferson and Harrison Smith, his 1st-Round drafting has been pretty lackluster to say the least. The Jeff Gladney incident is not his fault, but picks like Garrett Bradbury, Laquon Treadwell, Teddy Bridgewater, Mike Hughes and more are just overall bad picks.
Potential HC Options:
Eric Bieniemy, Kellen Moore, Dough Peterson, Brian Daboll, Byron Leftwich, Lane Kiffin, Jim Harbaugh
