Denver Broncos Quarterback Options Analysis

The Denver Broncos have had rough luck after winning Super Bowl 50 with Peyton Manning. With Peyton Manning retiring, the Broncos couldn’t and still can’t find the right quarterback. They have tried Brock Osweiler, Trevor Siemian, Paxton Lynch, Case Keenum, Joe Flacco, and Drew Lock. All six of those quarterbacks couldn’t find a path to the playoffs. Osweiler quit and went to a ton of other teams. Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch were both young and didn’t do anything good. Case Keenum did an okay job but it still wasn’t enough. Joe Flacco did alright but couldn’t put a lot of points on the scoreboard. Joe Flacco got injured in the middle of the season and Drew Lock had to come in. Drew Lock started amazing by going 4-1 in his first five games. The Denver Broncos now had everything. That is what they thought anyway. Drew Lock did horrible this season throwing so many interceptions. After the season, he was often ranked as the worst starting quarterback of the season. The Denver Broncos have yet to find a future quarterback for the franchise. Everyone expected them to pick up Justin Fields with the 9th pick in the NFL draft. Shockingly, the Broncos selected cornerback Patrick Surtain II. No one really knew why, the Broncos were already stacked in that position. Could this maybe mean something?

Before the NFL draft, rumors started coming out of nowhere that Aaron Rodgers wanted to leave the Green Bay Packers. It was said that his wish list was made up of the San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos, and Las Vegas Raiders. The Broncos made the most sense. The 49ers have Jimmy Garoppolo and the Raiders have Derek Carr. With 3rd pick in the draft, the 49ers also picked up Trey Lance. The Broncos didn’t select a quarterback in the whole draft. So out of those three teams, the Broncos will most likely be the team getting him. Aaron Rodgers would also be a great mentor for Drew Lock. The Broncos haven’t thought only about Aaron Rodgers though. Rumors about Deshaun Watson surfaced months ago and the Broncos were a top team to get him.

Deshaun Watson has proved himself to be a great quarterback. He can throw, escape, and rush when needed. Watson announced that we wanted to be traded away from the Houston Texans. He said he was frustrated, kind of like the Aaron Rodgers deal. Deshaun Watson had a lot of teams interested. Teams interested included, Patriots, Panthers, 49ers, Broncos, and more. Again, it looks like the 49ers filled their quarterback needs already. The Panthers traded for Darnold. The Patriots drafted Mac Jones and already have Cam Newton. The Broncos traded for Teddy Bridgewater. This all happened after Watson got a bunch of lawsuits on him for sexual assault. It looks like that may hurt his whole career but we don’t know for now. Hopefully he gets away from all the lawsuits and continues his future. But maybe the allegations can help the Broncos get him. His trade value might lower a little bit due to the lawsuits. I really think the Broncos could end up getting Watson. There still are a couple other options though.

Just recently, rumors say that the Broncos are looking at another potential quarterback, Jimmy Garoppollo. I don’t know how I feel about this one. He did end up in the Super Bowl recently but he had a really great team helping him out. The Broncos have the team to support Garoppolo like the 49ers. Other than these three quarterbacks, there aren’t many options for the Broncos. They need to act fast if they really want a new quarterback.

The last option is to keep Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewater. Peyton Manning has reportedly been training with Drew Lock all season. This could mean something. Peyton Manning is an all time great. He has 2 rings, so many records, and is in the Hall of Fame. Drew Lock has the potential for a great comeback season. Teddy Bridgewater has been proven to be a good backup quarterback. He was pretty decent with the Minnesota Vikings. He then played for the New Orleans Saints and was a backup to Drew Brees. When Brees got injured, Teddy stepped in big time and went 5-0. Teddy then signed with the Carolina Panthers and had a decent season. Both of these quarterbacks have potential.

The Denver Broncos have an amazing team right now. Their team is pretty young and has lots of future. You have a good wide receiver core with Courtland Sutton, Jerry Jeudy, and Tim Patrick. They have a decent running back in Melvin Gordon III. Their defense is definitely scary. They have an amazing defensive line with veteran Von Miller and a young Bradley Chubb. Their cornerbacks include Bryce Callahan, Kyle Fuller, Ronald Darby, and rookie Patrick Surtain II. Watch out for the safeties Justin Simmons and Kareem Jackson. They just need to put icing on the cake by doing these options. What do you think is the best option to go with?

  1. I would go with Deshaun Watson because he is still young and he is definitely on the move. If Denver wants to compete they need to make a move. Great article!
