New York Giants 2021 Offseason Recap (Free Agency signings, draft picks, etc.)
The New York Giants went into free agency with very limited cap space and still made a lot of great moves. The Giants roster has heavily improved since last season. The best move the Giants made in free agency was snagging the best available receiver, Kenny Golladay. The Giants signed him for 4 years, $18M per year. Another big signing was Adoree Jackson, he is a great fit with Bradberry and will help out the secondary, but he was overpaid. ($13M a year) Other free-agent signings were tight end Kyle Rudolph, defensive end Ifeadi Odenigbo, ST player/depth WR John Ross, linebackers Reggie Ragland and Ryan Anderson, running back Devontae Booker, Quarterback Mike Glennon, offensive lineman Zach Fulton, running back Corey Clement, former receiver/current tight end kelvin benjamin, defensive tackle Danny Shelton, and fullback Cullen Gillaspia. In my opinion, Golladay was the best signing, Devontae Booker was the worst signing, and Ifeadi Odenigbo was the most underrated signing. Golladay was the best because he is one of if not the best-contested catcher in the NFL, Booker was the worst because the Giants let go of Gallman (who was better) and paid Booker much more than Gallman got paid by the 49ers, and Odenigbo was the most underrated signing because the Giants got for cheap and he is an excellent rotation player and I feel will make a great impact to the team. Another underrated signing is also John Ross. He was signed for a very cheap deal and is a very speedy receiver, he may not do a lot for the Giants but he could have some punt returns or 1 to 2 flashy plays like deep passes.
During the draft, the Giants picked up Kadarius Toney, Azeez Ojulari, Aaron Robinson, Elerson Smith, Gary Brightwell, Rodarius Williams, Bears 2022 First Round Pick, Dolphins 2022 Third Round pick, and Bears 2022 4th Round pick. In the first round the giants were aiming for star Alabama reciever Devonta Smith, but the Eagles traded with Dallas and took him right before the Giants could. Unlike other years, the Giants didn’t panic and made a great trade with Chicago getting 3 picks from them. At pick 19 the Giants got Florida receiver Kadarius Toney. He is one of the top recievers in the draft at making defenders miss tackles and he is very fast, so I liked this pick a lot. The best pick in the draft in my opinion was 2nd round pick Azeez Ojulari. The Giants traded down with the Dolphins and were able to get one of the top edge rushers. He is very explosive off the edge and has the potential to be dominant for the Giants. The most underrated pick in my opinion was Aaron Robinson. He is a very physical corner back and could have a legitimate shot at winning the battle for slot cornerback. I think the worst pick was running back Gary Brightwell. When picked, he wasn’t even the to ranked running back left and there is also 3 running backs ahead of him (Saquon Barkley, Devontae Booker, and Corey Clement). Rodarius Williams and Elerson Smith weren’t great picks but for the round it was a solid pick. They will both be depth players this season. Overall the Giants had an excellent draft and built a lot of draft capital for next season. The Free Agency was also terrific. I think the Giants Offseason all together deserves a grade of A-. The Giants have a great future set up for them and can try to make a playoff run soon whether it is this year, or after that.
