Post-Week 4 Waiver Wire

The third Sunday of NFL football brought us some thrillers. Washington and both New York teams won in thrilling finishes. This week had some moderately impactful injuries, with David Montgomery, Teddy Bridgewater, Logan Thomas, Will Fuller, and Jimmy Garoppolo all leaving their games. Here are the top 5 waiver claims of the week:

1. Kenneth Gainwell RB PHI 24.7% owned

Very quietly, Kenneth Gainwell had 1 more opportunity (carries + targets) than Miles Sanders. He turned that into 89 all-purpose yards and a touchdown. Gainwell could take this backfield over very soon, and it is best if you can get in now. If Gainwell isn’t on your waiver wire, try to acquire him for some bench assets because 1 bad game or injury, and this backfield will belong to Gainwell.

2. Damien Williams RB CHI 10.4% owned

If a knee injury forces David Montgomery to miss a couple of weeks, Damien Williams needs to be at or near the top of your claim list. With Andy Dalton likely back next week, the Bears won’t have to rely on the run that much, which benefits Williams as he can operate as a receiving back. Damien Williams will be an RB2 that will win you games until David Montgomery comes back.

3. Trey Lance QB SF 19% owned

It seems like Jimmy Garoppolo will miss multiple weeks with a calf injury. Trey Lance is a must-stash on all benches, as he showed out in the second half against the Seahawks. If he performs well the next two weeks, the QB1 job in San Francisco is his. Lance has, in my opinion, the highest ceiling out of all the quarterbacks taken in the 2021 NFL Draft. Get Lance while you can because the future is bright for the young star.

4. Dalton Schultz TE DAL 20.9% owned

Dalton Schultz is looking like the real deal in Dallas. In the last two games, he has caught a total of 12 passes for 138 yards and 3 touchdowns. The tight end position does not look very deep this year, and if you are in one of the 80% of the leagues where he is available, put a claim in for the tight end in a very high volume passing offense. Schultz could be a league winner if he keeps this up.

Deep add:

5. Van Jefferson WR LAR 5.4% owned

Van Jefferson had a breakout game in the Rams’ blowout loss to the Cardinals. He was thrown 6 passes and caught all 6 for 90 yards and a touchdown. Van Jefferson is worth a pickup in deeper leagues as an injury to Robert Woods or Cooper Kupp could lead to a breakout campaign for him. Stash him on your bench as the sky is the limit if he can get targets.
