As we get closer and closer to the return of sports, we will have sports news. I will review sports in Atlanta every week and give you an overview on what has happened in Atlanta Sports every week.
This week was rough for the Braves. It started off fine as players reported to Truist Park to start workouts on Wednesday. The week got worse for the Braves as Covid-19 test results came in on Saturday morning. Manager Brian Snitker announced that INF Pete Kozma, P Touki Toussaint, P Will Smith, and All-Star 1B Freddie Freeman had tested positive for Covid-19. Will Smith and Touki Toussaint are currently asymptomatic while Kozma and Freddie do have some symptoms. Snitker said that Freddie has a fever and that it would be a while until he can report to camp. Later that day, Braves 1B coach Eric Young Sr and SP Felix Hernandez opted out of participating in the 2020 season. Then on Monday morning, RF Nick Markakis opted out as well. The Braves now have 4 players that have tested positive for the virus, along with 2 players and a coach that have opted out. In other news, the Braves 2020 Schedule was announced on Monday afternoon. The Braves will go to Citi Field to face the Mets in a three game series to start the season on July 24. We will see how the first full week of workouts goes for the Braves and if we lose any more players.
Atlanta United reported to Orlando this past week in preparation to start the MLS Is Back Tournament. They have been training at the facility in Atlanta for the past month. Atlanta United will open up the MLS Is Back Tournament vs the New York Red Bulls on July 11.
Georgia Tech football started Phase 2 of reopening the facility for activities last Monday. Unfortunately, 3 student athletes and staff tested positive for Covid-19. Along with this, Georgia Tech got 2021 3 Star Safety Kaleb Edwards on Wednesday. As soon as he announced his recruiting decision, his rank skyrocketed and he is now a 4 star recruit and ranked top 200 in ESPN's rankings.
Not much happened this week for the Falcons except that they have hired two women, Rushell Harvey and Kjahna O, to scouting roles. They are the first two women in Falcons history to be in the Falcons staff.
It was a quiet week for the Hawks as well. The Hawks did agree to turn State Farm Arena into the largest polling center in America for future elections.
