Decision Day 2020: Who's In and Who's Out?

With the MLS Cup playoffs just a few days away, the final regular season gameday of the 2020 MLS Season did not disappoint. Although the Western Conference had all of their playoff spots already clinched by a team, the Eastern Confernce had 2 spots left, with 5 teams battling it out for a chance to make it the playoffs; Inter Miami, Montreal Impact, D.C United, Atlanta United, and Chicago Fire. 13 games were played on Sunday, November 8. Let's see who made it to the playoffs:

*Team 7-10 in the EC qualify to a play-in round, seed 7 will host seed 10, seed 8 will host seed 9. The two victors from these games officially make it into the playoffs.*

Eastern Conference:

-Philadelphia Union (1)

-Toronto FC (2)

-Columbus Crew SC (3)

-Orlando City (4)

-New York City FC (5)

-Red Bull New York (6)

-Nashville SC (7)

-New England Revolution (8)

-Montreal Impact (9)

-Inter Miami CF (10)

Western Conference:

-Sporting Kansas City (1)

-Seattle Sounders FC (2)

-Portland Timbers (3)

-Minnesota United FC (4)

-Colorado Rapids (5)

-FC Dallas (6)

-LAFC (7)

-San Jose Earthquakes (8)

Let's go over the results of these games and see how they impacted the seeding. Although the WC had no playoff spots left, a victory for any team was crucial for a higher seeding.

Chicago Fire 3-4 New York City FC

One of the most thrilling games on Decision Day, Chicago had a playoff spot to fight for. 3-3 all by halftime, Chicago Fire ultimately failed to make the playoffs as NYCFC striker Valentin Castellanos scored the game winner in the 77th minute.

Columbus Crew SC 2-1 Atlanta United

Columbus Crew had the opportunity to reclaim the 3rd seed after their 2-1 loss to Orlando City the week before. Atlanta had to win to keep their playoff hopes alive. Unfortunately for Atlanta, they failed to claim the 3 points, and the 2018 MLS Cup champs disappointing season ended, missing the playoffs for the first time since their inaugural season in 2017.

D.C United 2-3 Montreal Impact

This was a battle with playoff implications. It was either going to be D.C or Montreal to qualify, as there was only room for one. Montreal happily claimed the 3 points in a thrilling match, and ended D.C United's dreadful season.

Inter Miami CF 2-1 FC Cincinnati

Literally playing through a tropical storm, Miami hoped to make playoffs in their first year of existence. Cincinnati had nothing left to play for, as they were eliminated from playoff contention weeks ago. Inter Miami braved the storm and claimed the 3 points, qualifying for their first ever MLS Playoffs (If the rules hadn't changed this year, they would've missed it).

Red Bull New York 2-1 Toronto FC

Toronto came into this match with hopes of claiming the Supporters Shield after crying about it being cancelled this season (the decision was reversed eventually). RBNY hoped for 3 points to climb the table, and that's just what they got. Toronto failed to win, as RBNY beat them in a 2-1 battle. Philadelphia Union ended up winning the Supporters Shield due to Toronto's loss.

Orlando City SC 2-3 Nashville SC

Orlando City welcomed Nashville to town, in hopes of remaining unbeaten at home. Nashville did not have much to worry about, as they already clinched a playoff spot a few weeks ago. An early goal by Daryl Dike and a glorious freekick by Nani were not enough to keep Nashville at bay, as they roared back with 2 LATE goals in the 88th and 94th minute, ending the unbeaten streak at home for Orlando.

Philadelphia Union 2-0 New England Revolution

Philadelphia had a chance to win their first ever trophy, the Supporters Shield. They did just that by defeating the Revs 2-0 at home. The Revolution could've climbed to the 6th seed, but ended in the 8th seed.

Houston Dynamo 1-2 Colorado Rapids

Houston had nothing left to play for, as they were eliminated from playoff contention. Colorado took their chances with a 2-1 win in Texas and earned the 6th seed in the West. Houston's disappointing season came to an end.

LAFC 1-1 Portland Timbers

LAFC closed out the regular season at home against Portland. A 1-1 draw result made sure LAFC dropped to the 7th seed, while it kept Portland from landing a 1st place seed. 3 points could have made Portland be the 1st in the West with 41 points, but they ended in the 3rd seed with 39 points, tied with Kansas and Seattle.

Minnesota United FC 3-0 FC Dallas

Minnesota came out to play and did so in style. The Loons hosted Dallas at home where Reynoso bagged a goal in while Kevin Molina got himself a brace with 2 goals. A cleansheet and 3 points was the perfect way to end the season.

Real Salt Lake 0-2 Sporting Kansas City

Sporting KC traveled to Utah, where they would take on the team 2nd to last place RSL. RSL were eliminated from playoff contention a couple games prior, so they had nothing to play for except to end the season on a high note. SKC had other ideas, as they ended RSL's season with 2-0 victory.

Seattle Sounders FC 4-1 San Jose Earthquakes

The reigning 2019 MLS Cup champs hosted SJ Earthqakes for the final regular season game. Both teams qualified for the MLS Playoffs, where SJ landed in the 8th and final spot in the West. Seattle pounced and thrashed San Jose with a dominant 4-1 win at CenturyLink Field with goals coming from Lodeiro, Ruidiaz, and Morris.

Vancouver Whitecaps FC 3-0 LA Galaxy

The final game of the regular season, LA Galaxy came to town hoping for a final 3 points against Vancouver. Both teams were eliminated from playoff contention, so each side wanted to finish their seasons with a good result. Vancouver made the Galaxy's already depressing season even worse with a 3-0 win. A red card for Julian Araujo from LA certainly did not make the loss any sweeter.

There you have it, all results from the final regular season matchday. The 2020 MLS Cup playoffs begin on November 20th. Here are the pairings for the Playoffs;
