Hitting (Yankees): The Yankees will dominate in the hitting game. With Judge, Stanton, Torres, LeMahieu, and Sanchez, they may have the best hitters in baseball. Their team is filled with big hitters including two former home run leaders in Stanton and Judge. They are ranked top 3 in multiple power rankings and that is because of their hitting. Expect them to be able to hit off the challenging Max Scherzer.
Pitching (Yankees): Signing 3x All-star and top 3 Pitcher in Gerrit Cole puts the team in automatic contention. I like the move to start Cole and there will be a lot of hype surrounding the pitcher's first regular-season game with the team. Cole is one of the most dangerous pitchers in MLB and led the league in strikeouts last year with 326. Expect him to be utilized as Cole had the 3rd lowest ERA in the league last year.
Hitting (Nationals): For the Nationals losing their best hitter in Anthony Rendon will be tough. Juan Soto has very high expectations and is ranked as the Nationals' best hitter. The Nationals are used to playing against Cole as he pitched for the Astros in the 2019 World Series. However, that being said Cole led the Astros to a 7-1 win over the Nationals in game 5. Look for the Nationals to struggle against Cole.
Pitching (Nationals): Max Scherzer used to be ranked the #1 starting pitcher in the league according to mlb.com. Last year Scherzer dropped to #4 and battled injuries throughout the entire season. Scherzer went 11-7 last year but has some of the best experience in the league.
With two top 5 pitchers in the league, this game could be a very exciting pitching battle.
X-Factor: Gioncarlo Stanton
Stanton is my X-Factor for this game. Last year Santon was regarded as one of the best LF/RF in the league. This year he barely cracked the top 10. Stanton only played 18 games last year and is ready to get back on top. Stanton is a hit or miss player. He is a former home run leader and can demolish a ball.
I think the Yankees will take the first game of the year! Let me know what you think in the comments!
