The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are back in the playoffs for the first time since 2008.The talent on this team is endless. They have multiple first ballot hall of famers and all pros. Needles to say this trip to the playoffs is much different than 13 years ago. With the additions of Tom Brady, Leonard Fournette, Rob Gronkowski, and Antonio Brown, the expectations for this is nothing short of the Super Bowl. But there is one red flag as to why this team will not win.
The biggest reason this team won't make the Super Bowl is because of the relationship between quarterback Tom Brady and Bruce Arians. Arians, relationship with Brady this season has been notified by the media all season. People questioned if Brady could take the harsh criticism of his that he spews to the press in postgame interviews and even throughout the week when the team practices. Arians is an offensive minded coach, he has an expectation for how his offense should be ran. And to his credit while in Pittsburgh as a wide receivers coach and eventually offensive coordinator he won 2 Super Bowls. But at the time he was coaching Ben Roethlisberger who's skill set is nothing like his current quarterback in Tom Brady. Roethlisberger is more physical guy with a bigger arm. He makes his money on deep bomb passes. Brady, who is widely considered the G.O.A.T. came in from New England where he was asked to rid of the ball quick with check downs and the occasional play action. In this offense Brady had double digits interceptions in this offense which this is only the 4th time in the last 10 years he's had that happen. Yes, Brady's stats are impressive with 40 touchdowns, but anybody who watched the tape knows that he was not a top 5 QB this season.
Brady at his best is when he has a consistent running game so that he can do play action. This team has the personnel to accomplish this but they haven't shown the willingness to change. They have 3 guys that could be number 1 backs anywhere in the league in Leonard Fournette, Ronald Jones Jr., and a lesser version of himself but still productive Lesean McCoy. These guys can all carry the ball 20-25 times a game, but Arians likes to pass the ball. There have been games this season that Arians will only give his backs 5 carries. And that will not work in an NFL game unless you have a QB like Mahomes and Rodgers who are pass heavy style guys. Defenses will pick up on the fact that you are not even attempting to run. The goal of an offense is to keep the defense on their toes guessing, but once you stop doing that you've lost. All this being said, until these 2 highly decorated and respected men around the league put their brains together, this team will not contend for a Super Bowl.
