We all know that the Buccaneers offense is one of the best in the game, and with Gronk and Brady, they should only get better. But people seem to forget about their defense. A few years ago the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense was a disaster one of the worst in the league but last year they got the ship under control. The Bucs defense against the run was the best unit in the entire NFL. They finished the season first in Rushing yards allowed, allowing only 73.8 yards per game, and first in yards per attempt (3.3), according to Pro Football Reference.
And the most impressive thing about those stats is against who they played. The list of RB they faced last year includes Christian McCaffrey (twice), Alvin Kamara, Todd Gurley, Saquon Barkley, Derrick Henry, Chris Carson, and Leonard Fournette.
It is true that they finished dead last in points allowed last season, but I think that doesn't tell the whole story, you know taking in count that your QB threw 30 interceptions and the offense lost 11 fumbles. Even with all of that, they managed to keep games close.
But the defense against the run isn't the only thing that improved last year. In the last 6 weeks, the Bucs had a total of 13 turnovers and they didn't allow a team surpass the 300 passing yards mark since week 10 against the Cardinals. In that same span, they only allowed 1 team to rush for more than a hundred yards. So it is no surprise that the team won 4 of their last 6 games.
The Bucs secondary was able to get better throughout the season and they haven't reached their ceiling. This secondary is one of the youngest units in the game, their top 3 corners include Carlton Davis who is entering his 3rd year, Jamel Dean, and Sean Murphy-Bunting who were rookies last year. And their safeties include Mike Edwards who was also a rookie last year, Jordan Whitehead who is a two-year veteran and rookie Antoine Winfield Jr.
The most important thing is that the Bucs didn't lose anybody on that defense and they only added more talent so I think we can expect great things from this defense and to be dominant throughout this season.
