By Javier Ascoli

On July 16th, 2020, Real Madrid have won their 34th La Liga championship. With a four-point lead to FC Barcelona, with two matchups left, Zidane’s team defeated Villarreal CF by a 2-1 score. With this win, and Barcelona’s tough loss at the Camp Nou vs Osasuna, mathematically no one else can win the tournament. Both goals were scored by the Frenchman striker Karim Benzema. This was the world’s longest La Liga season in history, due to COVID-19 concerns. Real Madrid returned to action with a huge performance after three long competition-less months. They have won ten out of ten matchups since the return after the coronavirus lockdown.

This tournament, was a difficult challenge for Zinedine Zidane, because when he returned to manage “Los Blancos”, this Real Madrid team previous’ season, was a season with lots of fails, they lost many matchups, players where playing really bad and they were a team with no self-confidence. During the offseason, Real Madrid signed the Belgian Superstar Eden Hazard, Serbian striker Luka Jović, Frenchman defender Ferland Mendy and Brazilian defender Éder Militão.

Real Madrid started La Liga’s season with a 3-1 win against Celta de Vigo on August 17,2019. After that game, they tied two consecutive games against Valladolid and Villarreal. Six games later they suffered their first loss in La Liga vs Mallorca. After Mallorca’s game, Real Madrid won every single La Liga game, including a 1-0 win against Atletico de Madrid and a 2-0 win in “El Clásico” against FC Barcelona, until March 2020, they lost against Real Betis. Days after this loss against Real Betis, La Liga was suspended for an unknown time due to the COVID-19 worldwide pandemic. Two months later, players returned to train with some specific protocols.

On June 14th, 2020, Real Madrid returned to action, with 11 games left, and two points behind FC Barcelona on the classification table. On the first game, they defeated Eibar 3-1 on the return after the Coronavirus lockdown. For the second game, they won 3-0 against Valencia CF, for the third one, Real Madrid won 2-1 against Real Sociedad. In the fourth game, they won 2-0 against Mallorca with an amazing free kick goal from Sergio Ramos. After Mallorca, they won three tough games 1-0, against RCD Espanyol, Getafe, and Athletic Bilbao. Later, they have defeated Alavés 2-0 and Granada 2-1. Leading the table with 4 points above FC Barcelona and with two games left, Real Madrid needed one more win, or one FC Barcelona loss to win their 34th La Liga Championship. Indeed, they won 2-1 against Villarreal on a very tough matchup. Both goals where scored by the Frenchman striker Karim Benzema. FC Barcelona lost against Osasuna the same day. So, with one game left Real Madrid is 7 points above FC Barcelona on La Liga’s table.

Real Madrid returned to action, showing to everyone what they where capable of. Over these 10 games, they showed strength, versatility, character, and other aspects that made them the best roster from the competition, both physically and mentally. The captain of the team, Sergio Ramos, showed that he is not only a great defender, he can also score important goals. Thibaut Courtois after a terrible first season, he was a consistent goalkeeper, with amazing saves. The midfield was amazing with Toni Kroos and Luka Modric returning to a very high quality and level.

After all, it was a tough season for every single team. But Real Madrid was a consistent team, who showed class, strength, great resistance on the players and a huge level. A worthy and well-deserved champion.
