The New York Mets had a very underwhelming 2020 season. Although it was only 60 games, along with a expanded postseason bracket, they missed the postseason for the 4th straight season.
There is still a lot of optimism with this team, solid pieces to build around and a brand new owner. Steve Cohen, the Mets new owner, has stated many times that he wants to spend money to get this team to the promise land. Many believe this can be a big offseason for the Mets and here are some player they may target.
Player 1: J.T Realmuto. J.T is presumably the best catcher in baseball at the moment, ready to hit the market this season. He spent the last few seasons in Philadelphia, where the team struggled to build around him and $330 Million dollar man Bryce Harper. The mets have a glaring hole at catcher, Wilson Ramos set to be a free agent this season and Tomas Nido not showing anything more than a backup. Although the contract will be large, the Mets may be willing to spend. If this were not to happen, expect the Mets to go after James McCann, who could provide as a solid backup plan.
Player 2: Trevor Bauer. SP who spent the season in Cincinnati, where he was traded to during the 2019 trade deadline. Trevor broke out this summer, possibly winning CY Young which many believe he is the guy to receive this award. He led them to the postseason and is now ready to be paid this winter. Expect a large contract for Bauer as well, and the Mets should be the one to give it out. With Marcus Stroman being an FA, it leaves the Mets with star Jacob Degrom, injured Noah Syndergaard, who should be back mid-season, and Rookie David Peterson. It leaves two starter spots open and I believe Bauer could give a much needed boost to the rotation. Another backup plan if this doesn't happen, could be bring back Marcus Stroman, Robbie Ray or Kevin Gausman.
Player 3: George Springer. The Astros OF is red hot this postseason. Leading the Astros back to the ALCS for the 4th straight year. He is set to be paid and the Astros could potentially find themselves in a salary cap crisis if they give him big-time money. The Mets found themselves a star OF/1B in Dom Smith this year, who finally broke out. Also still having OF Michael Conforto, they could look to replace CF Brandon Nimmo, who has not been what they expected. With Springer, the Mets could become a top tier lineup in the MLB without many holes. An alternative plan would be rolling with Nimmo again, and adding more depth to their rotation and bullpen.
The Mets 2021 season is all depending on getting better and growing as a team to win more ballgames. Many believe Steve Cohen is the one lead a culture change throughout the organization and bring the Mets back to the playoffs. With many options and many star Free Agents, the Mets could be a dangerous team with the right additions in 2021.
