The Arizona Cardinals have created a hype train for themselves in the 2020 offseason. But with hyped up teams not living up to it in the past, can we really expect this Cardinals team to live up or even come close to the hype? I believe they can come close to what is expected from them.
Ever since the Cardinals acquired DeAndre Hopkins from Houston for a rice cake and 73 cents, there has been hype on this team. They also drafted Isaiah Simmons in the 1st round of this years draft. Key Additions to the team include:
WR DeAndre Hopkins (Trade with Houston)
LB Isaiah Simmons (Drafted)
OT Josh Jones (Drafted)
DT Leki Fotu (Drafted)
Signs point to the Cardinals having a winning record this season. They are in a tough division but prevail and come from behind in some games, last year they beat the Seahawks in Seattle with backup QB Brett Hundley. In 2019 there was the Cleveland Browns hype and they disappointed everyone who actually thought the Browns would have a winning record. This year hype is split between the Cardinals and Buccaneers, I'm more into the Cardinals than the Bucs. As we saw with Cleveland last year, too much on a team and it doesn't perform as planned, the Bucs roster is loaded. I believe there are too many mouths to feed in Tampa Bay, similar to Denver, that's why Arizona will have a bigger leap this year. Arizona went 5-10-1, which placed them dead last in the NFC West.
Wide receivers Andy Isabella and Christian Kirk are primed to break out, especially with a good run game and with the addition of DeAndre "Nuk" Hopkins. Kyler has an arsenal this season and the Cardinals went nearly all defense in the draft. Kyler Murray is another year familiar with this team and is reportedly seeing things 'more clearly'. Head coach Kliff Kingsbury is another year smarter and knows who can do what and how good. I believe Arizona has a ceiling of 9-7 and a floor of 7-9, much of an improvement from last season.
Another topic I want to bring up for the Cardinals hype is a singular player, FS(free safety) Budda Baker. After converting from SS(strong safety) to FS, Budda Baker had a Pro Bowl season and earned himself the bag, a 4-year $59 million dollar contract with $33.1 million is guaranteed, he is only 24 years of age and now the highest paid safety in the NFL. On a quick note, rookie LB Isaiah Simmons plays both linebacker and safety as well, he will play linebacker in the NFL. Baker sometimes plays LB but not very often. The hard hitting safety is a very strong point on this defense, DC Vance Joesph does good things by playing Budda in different places. He is quickly giving the fans a new name to remember when they see the number 32. 147 total tackles and half a sack last year, Baker is going to be the defensive star for years to come.
To sum everything up, I am buying the Arizona hype this season. I don't believe that they will do something crazy like go 10-6 or 11-5 but they will definitely improve this year.
