Columbia, South CarolinaThe Shane Beamer era unofficially
kicks off at South Carolina after today’s spring game. The Garnet team beat Black, 14-10 though only 24:00 minutes of football were played. In this article, I will be taking you on an inside look at how well people played, the crowd, and what I took from the game.
QB: The Gamecocks played all four QB’s with Luke Doty looking to be QB1. The Gamecocks played senior transfer Jason Brown, sophomore Luke Doty, freshman Colten Gathuier, and walk on Connor Jorden. Luke Doty completed 5-7. Jason Brown hooked up with 6-foot-7 EJ Jennings for 6 late in the second quarter. During the second half when running situation drills the two hooked up once again. Colten barely got any passes off before being “sacked.” Connor Jorden also looked decent but, the odds of him playing are low. After practice HC Shane Beamer said as of now, Doty is the starter.
RB: RB 1 & 2 did not play Sunday due to injury and rehab, instead Quan White had a great day with 14 carries for 95 yards and a touchdown. The Gamecocks may have a three-headed monster at the running back position and I expect it to be a run-first team.
WR: Overall the WR core wasn’t great with a good amount of dropped passes, that could be because half of them didn’t play. EJ showed that he will be an amazing red zone threat. Dak Joyner had a good day and you can tell he has improved in the past few months.
Defense; Debo Willams. That’s all that needs to be said. He showed that he is head hungry and flew all around the field today. CB Marcus Dial also looked good, with a couple of pass breakups. The DL looked better and I expect them to look better this year than last.
K: Parker White missed a 58-yard attempt and some other guy didn’t.
Crowd: The crowd was electric even for a spring game. The sun odd 15,000 there made some noise and can’t wait to see (hopefully) 80.000 people there this fall!
Overall I am feeling pretty good about the upcoming season and can not wait!
